Car Photography Field Guide
Shoot car photos good enough to publish, sell, or hang on your wall.
From someone who's done all three for over 35 years.
To get there, you’ll need to master a few key principles and techniques. Learning (and remembering) those can be tough when you're out in the field, though. This field guide, which is designed for your smartphone, will always be with you, ready to remind you what to do in almost every situation.
Outdoor car photography requires a blend of technical skills, creative vision, and an understanding of how to present vehicles in the right way. This field guide will help you grasp the main techniques and develop the mindset necessary to produce high-quality results.
It contains most of what I learned shooting cars for magazines, manufacturers, and other clients over the last few decades – much of it during the awesome 80s and 90s, when the motor industry produced some of the coolest cars ever made.
The guide is intentionally simple so you can absorb it easily and not feel overwhelmed. It’s designed to be a resource you can refer to again and again on your phone when you’re out shooting, hence the format in which it’s delivered. There are tonnes of example images to help you with ideas for your own photography.

WHO’S THIS FOR?
This guide is for beginners – not advanced amateurs or pros - who want to take high-quality static images of cars. That said, my assumption is that you have a basic understanding of your camera equipment and the fundamentals of exposure.
WHAT’S THIS FOR?
Technology has made some aspects of photography easier, like fast and accurate auto-focus, variable in-camera ISO, extraordinary image detail, huge dynamic range, instant image preview, amazing lenses, and image stabilization. However, the principles and techniques required to create a great image have NOT changed, and they work whether you’re using a $300 D-SLR or a $20,000 medium format camera. And that’s what this guide is all about – principles and techniques.
You'll get the 70-page Car Photography Field Guide in PDF format, ready for viewing on your smartphone.
